Filmmaking is an artistic expression but it is also a huge business.
At first, I think that film is solely an art because that’s the basic description of films taught to us by the teachers. But as I watched the video, aside from the fact that I am really amazed with those revelations from different prestigious directors who shared their success from being “no one” to “somebody”, my mind also opened to the reality that some of these famous directors think first that filmmaking is a business.
Hollywood famous directors
We consider art as expressing yourself freely but in their case they rather think first whether the film they’re going to create could pay all the needed expenses in order to be produced. By that time, they are already thinking of business. Once they already determine its success and blockbuster potential, that’s the time they are already marketing the film to the audience.
But what I have realized in watching that video is that the film industry is a huge enterprise. It is the producers that serve as the entrepreneurs and the audiences are their consumers. Films are their products and when they make a new film, they are gambling more than just money. They are gambling their reputation. In the long run, they could be gambling their properties, families, or friends. It's more than a serious game, it's a serious business. |
THE GODFATHER directed by Francis Ford Coppola 1972
I could assume that every one of us has different purposes in the industry. Some people are working for film as art hoping to create a remarkable film that will change the world and will cause impact on the history of filmmaking. While others are working for film as business to gain profit and earn a living.

Actually, you can't have one without the other. This is almost the same thing as to these questions, “Which film I would rather watch?" and "Which film I would rather pay to watch?" In the end, you enjoy a movie after paying for it.
